A Planning Guide for Accessible Restrooms

Accessible restroom design goes beyond checking boxes for ADA compliance. This course provides architects and design professionals with practical guidance for navigating the key scoping and technical requirements of the ADA Standards and ANSI 117.1, while highlighting the design decisions that can make the greatest difference for users.

Participants will explore critical updates between the 2009 and 2017 editions of ANSI 117.1, including changes that have been incorporated into building codes across many states. The course also looks beyond minimum requirements to explore Universal Design strategies that can create more inclusive, functional, and welcoming restroom environments for people with a wide range of abilities.

Finally, the course highlights common design “red flags” and areas that warrant extra attention, including issues that have been the focus of civil rights lawsuits. Participants will leave with a clearer understanding of how to identify potential accessibility challenges early and make more informed design decisions.
