Schools for the Future: Lessons in Sustainable Design from Italy

Please join the AIANY Architecture for Education Committee for a discussion with Mario Cucinella of Mario Cucinella Architects (MCA). Cucinella will discuss his groundbreaking work in school design and sustainability in Italy, and how his broader theoretical, technical and material investigations have informed his design of schools and public facilities.

As part of the Architecture for Education Committee's ongoing series of engagements with international architects, we look forward to learning lessons and insights from Cucinella's experience that can enrich and strengthen the work of the committee and local practitioners.

About the Speakers:
Mario Cucinella is the founder and creative director of Mario Cucinella Architects (MCA), an international architecture and design practice, based in Bologna and Milan. Making use of its own internal R&D Department, which carries out research on sustainability issues, MCA is specialized in architectural design that integrates environmental and energy strategies. A winner of several competitions, Cucinella has built transformational work in civic, commercial, educational, health care, residential and urban design in Europe as well as in Algeria, China, Ghana and other locations. Holistic design excellence, sustainable building and the rational use of energy, are the focus of Cucinella’s practice and research. His work is driven by the positive long-term impact that each building can have on the regeneration of the surrounding environment—natural, socio-economic ,and urban. Working together with clients and communities, Cucinella always encourages the adoption of a design language capable of expressing the beauty, richness, and resources of local cultures.
