The day-long outing will explore techniques of placemaking on this wholly distinctive community and the construction challenges faced when building within fragile and endangered island landscape. The program will include a walking tour presenting an overview of the island’s unique history, tours of four private residences—examples of recently restored and renovated historic homes plus new and ongoing residential construction projects—and will conclude with an open-house reception. John Dempsey, President of Fire Island Pines Historical Preservation Society (FIPHPS); Noam Dvir and Daniel Rauchwerger, Founders of BoND Architecture; and Juan Pablo Mendez-Ruiz, Project Engineer at TYLin, will be our guides. “Improvising is the name of the game where an aging and idiosyncratic housing stock is coupled with unrelenting weather conditions and the hurdles of ferry deliveries,” writes Architectural Digest when describing BoND’s work on Fire Island Pines. “When the louvered windows of their clients’ Bates house needed replacing, BoND found that the only known remaining American manufacturer had closed, forcing them to scour the globe for a new source.” Regarding building on Fire Island Pines, Dvir and Rauchwerger say: “You have to love it. You are committed to the island’s future and its past.” Come see how the relationship between an idealized vision of sea-side regionalism and non-nuclear family compounds plays out in this rugged landscape and provocative location. Note: Return to Fire Island Pines will leave from Harbor Walk on the island side of the ferry. All must take a ferry from Sayville, New York to arrive at the starting point. A limited number of ride shares to and from the Center for Architecture to Fire Island Pines Ferry Terminal can be arranged upon request.
