Women Educating and Inspiring Generations," the AIANY Women in Architecture Committee is combining its monthly meeting in March with a networking event featuring Ivi Diamantopoulou, AIA, Director of Syracuse University School of Architecture NYC and Co-Founder of New Affiliates Architecture. An award-winning architect and educator, Diamantopoulou's life story and work is one that interrogates the relationship between academia and practice. She will share her personal journey from her early years of education and practice in Greece, to New York and the founding of her architecture firm. Please join us as Diamantopoulou shares her vision, strategic initiatives and collaborations with Syracuse University's New York City Program and New Affiliates Architecture. Learn how we can all “move forward together” and “educate and inspire generations”! The evening will start with committee announcements, followed by a presentation and conversation with Ivi Diamantopoulou after which attendees can network and mingle over food and beverages provided by our showroom host. Speaker: Ivi Diamantopoulou, AIA, Principal, New Affiliates Architecture; Professor of Practice and NYC Program Director, Syracuse University School of Architecture About the Speaker: Ivi Diamantopoulou, AIA, is a New York-based architect and educator. She is co-founder and principal of New Affiliates Architecture, an architecture practice that has completed a range of work from ground up projects to interiors to exhibitions and installations for institutions including the New York's Jewish Museum, the Shed, and the Park Avenue Armory. Alongside commissioned work, the practice has initiated an array of projects and collaborations that focus on matters of reuse within a context of material excess, particularly as it relates to current standards of practice. These inquiries have led to ongoing collaborations with various branches of the New York City government including the Departments of Sanitation and Parks and Recreation. New Affiliates has been named "Next Progressives" by Architect Magazine and featured in design lists at The Architect's Newspaper, Wallpaper Magazine, and Cultured, among others. They have been recognized with an Architectural League Prize, a New York New Practices Award by AIA New York, a Design Excellence Award by the Public Design Commission of New York, and a Bessie Award for Outstanding Visual Design. New Affiliates' work has been most recently exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art’s exhibition New York, New Publics, the 2024 Beta Biennial in Timisoara, Romania, and New York’s Swiss Institute. Alongside New Affiliates, Diamantopoulou is a Professor of Practice at Syracuse University’s School of architecture where she has also served as the New York City Program Director since 2022. She previously held teaching appointments at Columbia's GSAPP, Princeton University, and Sarah Lawrence College. She holds a Master of Architecture from Princeton, where she was awarded the Suzanne Kolarik Underwood Prize for excellence in design and a Stanley J Seeger fellowship; and a Diploma with honors in Architecture and Engineering from the University of Patras in Greece.
