Designing the Historic Stonewall National Monument Visitor Center

Designated by President Barack Obama, the Stonewall National Monument marks the historic site of the Stonewall riots, a pivotal moment for the Gay Rights Movement (which grew into the modern LGBTQIA+ rights movement). This panel focuses on the design of the Stonewall National Monument Visitor Center by EDG Architecture and Engineering. Starting from the design requirements from Pride Live, the discussion explores the practical aspects of historical preservation, LGBTQIA+ advocacy, and innovative architecture. Attendees will gain insights into EDG's design team's challenges, see how historical significance is integrated with contemporary design, and understand the collaborations between multiple organizations and stakeholders that shaped the Visitor Center. The conversation will examine the project's impact as the official hub within the designated national monument, emphasizing its practical role in providing information and welcoming visitors. We'll hear from a special panelist, Mark Segal, who was present at the riots, in addition to Diana Rodriguez, Founder of Pride Live and Stonewall National Monument Visitor Center, and two architects from EDG Architecture and Engineering.
