Remember the Triangle Fire: Collective Ribbon Sewing

March 25, 2024 will mark the 113th anniversary of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire and the first commemoration ceremony with the permanent memorial installed on the site of the Fire. The Center for Architecture together with the Remember The Triangle Fire Coalition and the designers of the memorial, Uri Wegman and Richard Joon Yoo, invite the public to learn about the legacy of the Triangle Fire and the making of the permanent memorial with a special program at the Center for Architecture.

The collective ribbon project began in 2019 in order to create the unique texture of the Triangle Fire memorial. In the first workshop, over 300 participants sewed together personal textile items into a 300-foot-long ribbon, thus sharing their connection to the story and the legacy of the Fire. The texture of the ribbon was etched into the metal body of the memorial. The coalition continues to collect more stories and fabrics from new participants who want to learn and engage in the legacy of the Triangle Fire.

In this workshop, the public is invited to view original panels of the collective ribbon and add their pieces of fabric and stories to a new section of the project. The new pieces will be archived and displayed at future events and exhibitions.

We encourage attendees to bring their own fabric and materials that speak to the legacy of The Triangle Fire. Additional sewing materials will be provided. Participants are welcome to join throughout the duration of the event.
