Event Details

THINK Construction and AIANY Custom Residential Architects Network invite AIANY members to take a hard hat tour of a state-of-the-art renovation of a historic brownstone to explore the strategies used by architectural, engineering and construction consultants when clients aim to blend old with new under extremely challenging, urban conditions. The tour will allow the participants to see firsthand the inner workings of this ground-up renovation project within one of Manhattan's Upper West Side Landmark Residential Districts.

The project architect, engineer, and construction managers will describe the design and specifications process required to preserve the turn-of the century brownstone facade and party walls in their original form while rebuilding the entire structure that lies behind it to accommodate the needs of the current homeowner. Working on a site that is just twenty-feet wide sandwiched between fully occupied buildings, THINK Construction was required to excavate almost twenty-feet deep for the newly added steel and concrete structural system and the steel and glass garden facade. Not a single construction material or piece of equipment could be delivered or utilized without a strategy in place and a complex method of installation and supervision. All new interior spaces, vertical circulation, and heating and cooling systems needed to be coordinated with the methods and means used during the original masonry and brick bearing wall construction, and done without any disturbance to the adjacent buildings and occupants.

*This project is a construction site! Please make sure to bring boots*
